No, not that Lotus. Does OPPO think that they’re going to reveal anything interesting tonight, or is it just going to be the expected autonomous Uber-Tesla rent-a-car mashup?

From Lotus R&D’s About page:
“Like a lotus flower that grows out of the mud and blossoms above the muddy water surface, we can rise above our defilements and sufferings of life.” - Buddhist Value
I like the other Lotus better...

Faraday won’t let themselves be caged like this.

I’m expecting the expected on this one, but it would be neat if was something else!

I’m interested to see what they’re up to, but my 9 year old son is really stoked about it. He overheard a radio piece about them, and loves the idea of a car that will just show up and take you places safely so you can just place around in the back seat (I told him I don’t think it will quite work like that). Anyway, I’m afraid I’ve somehow failed as a father (although he does also say that he wants me to keep my M3 long enough so he can drive it).

A change of this magnitude in the field will almost certainly affect the current paradigm. It will certainly have an effect. Magnetic, if you will.

It’d be really Coulomb, um... if it was a floating car or something.
You know, electromagnets and whatnot.

Haha I don’t know if I could ever fully trust a “totally autonomous” car. He’s young though, I bet once he gets behind the wheel he will feel differently. Has he been karting? I know that was it for me! I was six or 7 and I was too young/short to drive, but my dad would let me steer the go kart. It wasn’t long after that I burnt holes in the plastic “tires” on my power wheels throwing “hip drifts” around the neighborhood.

Oh yeah, we have an awesome indoor kart track in town (with asphalt floors) and he loves it. He knows the fun of driving but also sees the benefits and safety of autonomy, without considering what we, as enthusiasts, might lose in the process.

That’s great, smart kid! In my “perfect” world, the test to get your driver’s license would involve track time and otherwise be really difficult/comprehensive. If you did not want to/could not pass the test, then you could only purchase/operate autonomous vehicles.

I wish the U.S. did it like Germany and required you to test on a manual or you only get a restricted license. I agree that the standards should be much higher here. Interesting thought that much less of the population would be licensed and the rest get autonomous cars. Might be the way forward, as there will always need to be truck drivers, vehicles for construction, etc. that there’s no way an autonomous vehicle could perform all required tasks.

Imagine it! Let’s say maybe half the drivers that are on the road now and they’re all much better drivers! I’m sure like anything else, it would come with it’s share of disadvantages. I can’t imagine the kind of legal poostorm that would happen the first time a licensed driver gets in a big accident with an autonomous car.
Agreed, Germany and even Finland know how to issue a driver’s test

I’m down with lots of autonomous cars on our roads if they all stay in the right lane and the government and insurance companies don’t try to take away our current rights and freedoms as drivers.
